John Cully Sevens Tournament

In this years John Culley’s Trophy 17 Primary Schools from the Leeds area competed in a full contact 7 a side rugby league event. There are 3 Trophy’s to be won all named after John Culley. John played for Hunslet R.L.F.C. from 1901 – 1906. He was a life long Hunslet supporter until his death in 1973 aged 98.

The tournament was played at Stanningley Sports & Amateur Rugby League Club. Lower Wortley Primary School came away winning the Bowl. Castleton Primary School were winners of the Plate.

Bramhope and Templenewsam Halton battled it out in the final of the Culley Trophy with the game ending in a draw. A period of golden points could not separate the two sides and it was decided that they would share the trophy.

The photograph shows the joint winners been presented with the Trophy by Johns grandson Brian Cully who also is an ex Hunslet Parkside player.

There is more information regarding John Cully on our archives section titled THE ROYAL CONNECTION.

Just a thought Brian, if you could inform the ex Parksiders the date of next years tournament I am sure a few of us will be able to attend to give our support to the great work you are doing.

  1. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation however I in finding this matter to be actually something which I think I might by no means understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I’m looking ahead on your subsequent publish, I will attempt to get the hang of it!|
